7 Best AI Art Generators In 2022 (Create Art In Seconds)

Written by Cody

Updated: Oct 10, 2022

There’s no doubt about it – artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live and work. And in the future, AI will only become more integrated into our lives. From AI writing tools, to AI video generators, and AI text-to-voice software, AI is becoming more and more sophisticated.

In 2022 and beyond, one area where AI is making a big impact is art. There are now a number of AI art generators that can create stunning works of art from just a few words of input text. So if you’re looking for some new inspiration, or just want to see what AI art looks like, here are seven of the best AI art generators to check out in 2022.

What Are the Best AI Art Generators?

AI-generated art is a fascinating concept and produces even more fascinating results. I’ve truly had a blast testing these AI tools out and have even started using them in my own blogs.

So, without further ado, here is my list of the 7 best AI art generators in 2022.

1. Jasper Art

Overview

Jasper Art is an innovative platform leveraging sophisticated AI to create original AI art from the text the user provides. You have an opportunity to “tell” Jasper to create drawings, complex images, words, or pretty much anything else.

The control you’ll have over AI-generated content is also great; Jasper Art allows you to snap screenshots, copy any images to the clipboard, and define particular parameters for how you want your image to turn out (i.e. style, medium, mood, keywords, etc).

Another important aspect of Jasper Art is that this artificial technology is capable of learning and adapting to new tasks. You can provide feedback to Jasper by “reacting” to the images the program generates (thumbs up or down), or by flagging content you deem inappropriate.

Key Features

  • Advanced text-to-image AI
  • Guided and free-form image creation
  • A helpful community of users sharing their inputs
  • Random text-to-image generator
  • Extremely easy and straightforward to use

Pricing

Right now, you need to be a paying Jasper.ai member to get access to the art feature for $20/month. However, you can signup to Jasper’s “Art & Write” plan for $49/month which gives you access to Jasper Art and includes access to 50+ AI copywriting templates.

What I Like / Dislike About Jasper Art

This program is among the best AI art generators if you’re looking for something that’s intuitive to use, produces high-quality output, and is continually being updated. On top of all that, the fact that it will only get better at creating beautiful art the longer you use it is fantastic.

Jasper Art AI is still in development. The program still struggles to create authentic human faces and spelling words.

Who Is This For?

Jasper Art is ideal for people that want unique, interesting pictures for their social media, or for personal use. Since it’s still in beta, I mainly recommend it to bloggers, casual art fans and enthusiasts.

2. MidJourney

Overview

MidJourney is a team of IT researchers that is developing a simple, easy-to-use AI art generator. The program is currently in beta and integrates with Discord.

Unlike contemporary AI art programs, MidJourney also sports a variety of social features meant to connect art enthusiasts and MidJourney users. The MidJourney Map is a visual representation of MidJourney users that displays users as “dots” based on profile and content similarity.

As a Discord app, MidJourney is leveraging the platform’s network to help users create groups, chat, and meet others without them having to pay a dime.

According to the program’s creators, MidJourney’s AI needs about a single GPU minute to generate an image. The “Fast GPU Mode” allows users to create images in bulk more quickly while “Relax GPU Mode” is only available with Standard and Corporate subscriptions.

Key Features

  • Image leaderboards and ratings
  • MidJourney Map
  • User galleries
  • Personal bot chat
  • Customizable account privacy
  • Archive Timeline View
  • Integrates with Discord

Pricing

MidJourney offers three subscription plans, including Basic at $10 per month; Standard at $30 per month, and Corporate at $600 per year. A free trial version is also available with limited features.

What I Like / Dislike About MidJourney

MidJourney is a revolutionary AI that can create and upscale exquisite images in minutes. The app’s pretty cheap, and you can use the free version to create roughly 25 images whenever you want.

Given how advanced MidJourney already is, I won’t consider the fact that it’s in beta a drawback. What I didn’t like is that you’ll have to pay extra fees whenever you’re using Metered Mode and that the “Relaxed GPU Time” isn’t available with the Basic subscription.

MidJounrey also isn’t as user-friendly as Jasper and requires that you navigate your way through all the other Discord noise to get the image you generated.

Who Is This For?

Despite being in beta, MidJourney is a highly innovative app that is growing each minute. I recommend it to casual art enjoyers, larger businesses, and everyone in between, given that the app’s quite affordable.

3. DALL-E 2

Overview

DALL-E 2 is a highly advanced text-to-image AI generator developed by Open AI. If you’ve never heard of Open AI, they’ve basically reinvented the wheel with some of their earlier projects, and DALL-E 2 stands for the pinnacle of AI-generated art.

The accuracy of this app borders on absurdity while the pool of graphics it draws from when creating images is deep, to say the very least.

DALL-E 2 leverages state-of-the-art technology called “Image Diffusion” to understand relationships between images and text, which makes it much stronger than contemporary AI art generators.

Key Features

  • Revolutionary Image Diffusion technology
  • Creates original images or edits existing ones
  • Supports HD image creation and editing tasks
  • Improves with real-time feedback

Pricing

DALL-E 2 offers four subscription packages, including Ada at $0.0004 providing 1k tokens; Babbage at $0.0005 providing 1k tokens; Curie at $0.0020 for 1k tokens, and Davinci at $0.0200 for 1k tokens.

What I Like / Dislike About DALL-E 2

DALL-E 2 is one of the most advanced text-to-image AI generators on the market. It can create exquisitely gorgeous art or reshape the simplest images into artistic wonders. I was completely taken aback by its image editing capabilities

DALL-E 2 uses a unique pricing concept. Instead of 1 token corresponding to 1 word, the value of each token corresponds to pieces of words (e.g. 1,000 tokens corresponds to roughly 750 words). It may seem dirt-cheap, but higher-level subscriptions can rack up quite a bill.

Who Is This For?

If you love art but can’t paint, draw, or sketch, DALL-E 2 may be a bit overkill. If you’re running a business and want to create outstanding graphics to serve as a face for your brand without having to pay thousands of dollars to pro designers, DALL-E 2 is what you’re after.

4. Stable Diffusion

Overview

Stable Diffusion is an AI art generator created by NightCafe. It supports advanced image outputs and performs marvelously when generating complex images while one of its strongest points is the ability to create unique image mashups.

Speaking of which, many contemporary AI art creators can blend two pictures together or simply “borrow” the desired elements. Stable Diffusion features technology similar to Open AI’s that is required to understand the relationships between different text and image-based elements.

This ensures Stable Diffusion picks the right elements with increased accuracy and places them in the correct spots more frequently. Just like all other AI apps, Stable Diffusion artificial intelligence is learning and improving the more it is used.

Key Features

  • Code-free AI image generator app
  • Cross-device compatibility
  • Image mashup
  • Multiple payment methods

Pricing

Stable Diffusion offers four subscription packages, including AI Hobbyist at $9.99 per month; AI Enthusiast at $19.99 per month; AI Artist at $49.99 per month, and AI Professional at $79.99 per month. Credit packs can also be purchased separately.

What I Like / Dislike About Stable Diffusion

Although Stable Diffusion subscriptions aren’t the cheapest, you have multiple choices, all of which can be reinforced with standalone credit packs. Regarding the app’s performance, its capability to create high-quality images and blend existing ones with superior accuracy is exemplary.

As a credit-based AI platform, you’ll be asked to choose a subscription and basically “guess” how many monthly credits you’ll want. All subscriptions are equipped with the same features, meaning there’s no “exclusivity” to speak of. I recommend going with a bit more expensive plans to avoid spending extra money on credit packs (which are considerably more expensive).

Who Is This For?

Stable Diffusion’s AI text-to-art generator is great for entrepreneurs, social media influencers, digital artists, and businesses of all sizes.

5. Wombo Art

Overview

Wombo.art has created a revolutionary AI-powered app that can create beautiful images from text-based prompts. Unlike the majority of apps on this list, Wombo Dream is primarily focused on generating “new” rather than improving/editing existing photos and images.

To start using Wombo’s Dream, you can create an account, but it is not required to use the app’s main features. By creating an account, you can access Wombo.art’s networks; its Discord group is a pretty large community, so I recommend doing this if you happen to like the app and want to meet like-minded individuals.

The “Get Started” button in the upper right corner essentially creates a new project; simply select one of the 15 provided art styles, and type in the text that Wombo’s AI will use to create a rough idea of what you want before it generates a brilliant piece of art.

Key Features

  • Web and phone app compatibility
  • Mint as NFT feature
  • 15 unique Art Style templates
  • Customizable AI art elements

Pricing

Wombo.art’s Dream app is free to use. You can save or share the images you create with this app, but if you plan to use them for commercial purposes, you’ll have to buy them individually.

What I Like / Dislike About Wombo Art

The fact that you can use the latest AI text-to-image technology without spending a cent is amazing in itself. What I really love about Wombo AI is that you can actually influence the end result by picking a template beforehand. On the downside, AI struggles to distinguish between human faces and more complex elements.

Who Is This For?

Wombo AI is ideal for social media influencers and content creators. It may not be as accurate as Open AI, Stable Diffusion, or DALL-E 2, but this leaves more room for experimentation and improvisation, plus it’s basically free to use.

6. ArtBreeder

Overview

Art Breeder is an excellent image creator and possibly the best AI art generator for people that want to edit & fine-tune existing images.

Its strongest point is unparalleled image customization. This app allows you to modify the “genes” of the images the AI creates, allowing you to recolor them, make it look aged, or even change the gender if it’s a human.

True to its name, Art Breeder was designed to mix, or “breed” existing images. The method by which its AI is mashing images and pictures together is purposefully chaotic, designed to leave as much room for experimentation as possible.

Key Features

  • Image Gene tweaking
  • Image mashup
  • Powered by machine-learning technology
  • Dozens of art categories
  • A budding Art Breeder community

Pricing

Art Breeder offers three subscription options. The Starter Breeder plan costs $8.99/month, the Advanced Breeder plan costs $18.99/month and the Champion Breeder plan costs $38.99/month.

What I Like / Dislike About ArtBreeder

I love the almost chaotic element of experimentation ArtBreeder is widely acclaimed for. You can repeat the same project an infinite number of times, and the results will be different. This is also a drawback, especially for people who already know how their images should turn out.

Who Is This For?

Art Breeder is best suited for open-minded art enthusiasts. If you don’t have a specific vision toward which you want to direct Art Breeder’s AI, this app will serve you well.

7. Starry AI

Overview

When it comes to free AI creators, Starry AI is probably the best AI art generator available in the current market. It offers full customizability of generated artwork, which can be created based on multiple presets.

You can upload and edit your own images, or generate a new one from scratch. Several tweakable parameters are at your disposal, including aspect ratio, models, art styles, and more. What’s more, you’ll have full ownership of all artwork created via Starry AI.

Key Features

  • Based on the VQGAN-CLIP model
  • Multiple styles available
  • Selectable Canvas size
  • Full ownership
  • Can create AI-generated NFTs
  • Supports up to 5 daily artworks

Pricing

Starry AI is free-to-use.

What I Like / Dislike About Starry AI

Starry AI is the ultimate free AI art generator, period. Its powerful machine learning capabilities and accuracy are not something to scoff at. However, the limitation of being able to generate only 5 art pieces per day is a major hindrance.

Who Is This For?

I recommend Starry AI to people that would use it for personal use. You can create marvelous Instagram and Facebook with it, but users are limited to 5 daily tasks.

Comparing 3 AI Art Generators

I thought it would be cool to compare three different AI art generators and see what each one came up with.

So, for this test, I decided to compare Jasper Art, MidJourney, and Stable Diffusion.

I used the exact same input text for each of these tools which was:

“An animated small cat, adorable-looking, symmetrical. Insanely detailed, colorful, high resolution, whimsical, 8k, unreal engine, POV low angle from the front grass”

Here are the results of each test:

Test #1 – Jasper Art

Jasper Art creates 4 outputs for each text input you give it. I thought the tool did a great job at portraying what I wanted based on my input.

Test #2 – MidJourney

Next up is MidJourney. For this art generator you need to join a Discord server and input your text in one of the Newcomer Rooms. Here is what MidJourney generated.

The results are pretty out of the box and not necessarily what I was expecting but hey! If it’s pretty cool nonetheless.

Test #3 – Stable Diffusion

This tool prompts you to simply enter your input text but you also need to choose a style in which you want your image to be generated as. There are various styles available including Matte, Cosmic, Cyberpunk, etc. I just chose Matte for this example.

Overall I like the output of this one. The eyes are very realistic and although the rest of the image is kind of fuzzy, I’m sure I could sharpen it up with some other tools or different input text.

Unlike the other two tools in this test, Stable Diffusion only generates one image instead of four so you’ll need to keep generating if you want more options.

Test Conclusion

Each tool in this list outputs significantly different results. What I’ve also found is that each tool has it’s own set of intricacies when it comes to what input you should be using in order to get the results you want.

It takes some practice and understanding of how each tool works to get the most out of them.

I’ve got to say though that Jasper Art has outputted some amazing images for me and when combined with an AI image upscaler, you can create some fantastic results. The community is also very helpful in sharing what works best in terms of input text as well as other tools you can use to further enhance your images.

For example, using a tool like Baseten can help you improve facial features that look a bit wonky from AI-generated art. You can also use a beta version of Photoshop to achieve this, but that isn’t as readily available for everyone.

Overall though, playing around with these AI art generators is really fun and I’m sure that with more time they’ll get even better and we’ll find more and more use cases for them.

Final Thoughts

If you ask me, the best AI generator is a program that can learn your preferences at a satisfactory pace. Nearly all contemporary apps are clunky at first, but once you’ve properly set them up in your workflows, they start to shine, and the same goes for AI art generators.

Jasper Art is, in my humble opinion, the strongest and most easy-to-use app in the current market.
